Dear old Golden Rule days

So it was August and I was browsing the NMSU web site looking for a job. (I interviewed with their IT department before we moved here but never heard back from them.) Instead of a job, I discovered that NMSU had just started a four-year aeronautical engineering degree program. “I want to do THAT!”, said a voice in my head.

We moved to Las Cruces this year because I want to work in the space industry. None of the existing companies seem to want to hire a network administrator. Well, how about a rocket scientist? So I talked it over with Anna and we decided to give it a go. Less than two weeks later I walked into the classroom.

This was a scary decision. It means no full time job for at least four years. My last college career, twenty years ago, was, ahem, undistinguished. Would I repeat the same mistakes?  Would we starve?
I took two classes, Calc I and Physics I. Last week I took my finals.

So how did I do? Well, I think. I’m sure I passed them both. I haven’t gotten the NMSU website to disgorge my grades yet. Too bad they didn’t hire me, eh? For them.

For me, I’m extremely pleased with myself. The early indications are that I can do this.

And then I can wear the “Actually, I AM a rocket scientist!” t-shirt.

About Doug

I grew up an Air Force brat and have visited every European country except those once behind the Iron Curtain (they wouldn't let my father in for some reason). Now I'm enrolled in the Aerospace Engineering program at NMSU in Las Cruces, NM.

  1. If you’re bored with Rocket Science and Legos don’t do it for you any more, the Principality of Sealand is for sale…
